Exclusive event for foster youth grades 5th - 12th.
Diana Lopez, the author of Coco a Story about Music, Shoes, and Family, will lead interactive writing sessions on how to turn off the inner critic and turn on the voice of confidence through writing.
The day will start with Monkey Brain, an ice breaker. This is what Diana calls the inner critic. The group will discuss and Diana will share how the monkey brain has manifested in her life as well as in her characters. Continuing with the theme, the youth will privately make lists of what their monkey brain says. They will finish this activity by destroying and throwing away their lists.
During lunch provided by Chick-Fil-A, Steve Garcia, a local musician, will share his love of music and guitar.
After lunch, Diana will guide the youth in creating transformative statements and how to restate challenges into opportunities. She will share some of the negative thoughts of her characters and revise them as a group. The youth will be encouraged to write their own statements, which will culminate in creating a positive affirmations quilt.
Foster youth will be gifted with an autographed copy of Diana Lopez's book.
